Geographically demarcated by Gampaha district Western Province North is divided in to 6 areas for administrative purposes. They are Gampaha,Kelaniya,JaEla Negombo,Divulapitiya & Veyangoda. Western Province North has shown a significant growth in both industrial and domestic sector over the past five years. Also very high economic growth can be expected for the entire province in future. Western Province North contributes for a major position in sales and revenue collection in the distribution division.
The reliability of the distribution has become a must, as the country’s main industrial zones are located in this province, namely Katunayaka EPZ, Wathupitiwala EPZ, Malwatta EPZ, Meerigama EPZ, Biyagama EPZ and Ekala Industrial area. Location of the International airport in the province and proximity to the Colombo Port, well developed infrastructure facilities are some of the other key factors for location and attraction of large number of industries in this province. Garment factories, rubber, plastic, textile, chemical, steel, fibre and ceramic industries are some examples for the industries that are established within the province. Existing Industrial zones are almost fully utilised. But the growth of Industrial sector within the province is likely to be continued at a higher rate with the new Katunayake express way project .Also new industrial estates and parks have been identified in areas such as Walpita and Henegama.
The Province has a comparatively sound MV distribution Network currently fed by 7 GSS located within the province and by importing from 4 other GSS that are located out of the province. Several reinforcement lines have been proposed to strengthen the network to meet the anticipated load growth. New Aniyakanda GSS was connected to the network in 2009 and New Katunayake GSS was connected to the network at the beginning of 2010. Also the augmentation of Kotugoda & Veyangoda GSS will be completed before end of 2011. In order to meet the future demands Kelaniya GSS has to be augment within next year. New GSS have been proposed at Kerawalapitiya in 2012 & at Wathurugama in 2014
